Adolescent Depression Screening and Value as a QI Depression is a highly prevalent disorder, affecting nearly 13% of adolescents aged 12-17 years. This problem affects millions of adolescents in high school who encounter several barriers to mental health care, such as a lack of insurance. A worrying trend at this facility is the poor screening rates of depression among this patient population, despite recommended screening using validated tools. Screening is essential to initiate early management of the disorder, appropriate referrals to mental health care and preventing relapses and poor quality of life among those who screen positive for depression and fail to get treatment. Evidence has indicated the importance of staff education in improving screening rates. Thus, this QI project will examine the importance of increased depression screening among adolescents incorporating interventions such as education of clinicians for sustained improvements.
